FAQ

How much money should I bring?

At trip orientations, money specifications will be discussed. The amount you pay the school to go includes hotels, train travel cards, some group meals, etc. Out of pocket you must pay for your plane ticket, non-group meals, snacks, and any souveniers you may wish to bring home.

In short, it mostly depends on the student. Most students spend anywhere from $500-$700.

Will my credit/debit card work abroad?

Before travelling, it is important to call your bank and let them know the dates you will be out of the country so that your card is not declined. Most of the major credit cards, such as VISA, Mastercard, and American Express work internationally. Although this is true, it is suggested that you bring cash incase a card does not work at a specific location. If you were to run out of cash, there are ATMs scattered around Japan that could be used to withdraw cash (yen). At the airport in Japan, you will also be able to exchange American dollars to yen.

Is there anything I should pack that I wouldn't normally think of?

It is suggested that you bring a portable charger because there will be days you will not have a chance to plug-in your phone for a long time. Also, a plug-in adapter could be helpful at certain locations.

If you are fair-skinned, a small bottle of sunscreen or a “sun” umbrella is advised.

Will my phone have service abroad?

Before travelling out of the country, it is important to call your data provider to ask about international phone plans. If your provider does not have one, there other options, such as global roaming, domestic SIM cards, rental wifi “boxes,” etc.

What kind of clothing should I pack?

It is suggested to bring clothing without graphics on them. In Japan, it is a social norm to dress nicely. Examples are plain t-shirts, jeans/long pants, nice shorts, skirts, and dresses. Sweaters, rain-jackets, sandals, and a pair of good walking/running shoes are also recommended. Bring enough clothing to last at least five days. Laundry services will be available, but it may be a while before reaching such service.
